How to Get Rid of a Mattress in San Antonio
Your options for old mattresses and box springs, from free city drop-offs to same-day pickup.
Mattresses are one of the hardest things to get rid of. They're big, heavy, awkward to move, and most trash services won't take them with your regular garbage. If you're replacing a mattress or clearing out a spare room, here are your options in San Antonio.
Option 1: City bulky waste drop-off centers
The City of San Antonio runs bulky waste drop-off centers that accept mattresses, furniture, and appliances for free if you pay the city's environmental fee on your CPS Energy bill. They're open Tuesday through Saturday, year-round.
What to bring: a photo ID and a recent CPS Energy bill. The names on both need to match.
The catch: you need a truck or trailer big enough to haul the mattress, you'll need to tarp or tie it down, and you do all the loading and unloading yourself. Locations and hours are listed at SArecycles.org.
Option 2: City curbside bulky collection
San Antonio residents also get scheduled curbside bulky item pickup. If your collection date is coming up soon, you can set the mattress out at the curb.
The catch: you have to wait for your scheduled date, there are limits on how much you can put out, and the mattress sits at the curb in the weather until the truck comes. Check SArecycles.org for your area's schedule and rules.
Option 3: Free landfill days
A few times a year, the city hosts free landfill days where residents can drop off mattresses and other bulky items at participating landfills. Same requirements apply: photo ID, CPS Energy bill, and a covered load.
Option 4: Donate or sell it
If your mattress is clean, in good shape, and free of stains or tears, you might be able to sell it or give it away on Facebook Marketplace. Keep in mind that many donation centers don't accept used mattresses for health and safety reasons, so call ahead before you load it up.
Option 5: Hire a junk removal company
If you don't have a truck, don't want to wait for your pickup date, or just don't want to wrestle a king-size mattress down the stairs, a junk removal company is the easiest option. We come to you, carry it out from anywhere in the house, and haul it away, usually same day or next day.
How much does mattress removal cost?
| What you're getting rid of | Typical price |
|---|---|
| One mattress or box spring | $75 – $150 |
| Mattress + box spring set | $100 – $175 |
| Mattress set + bed frame or other furniture | $150 – $250 |

Tips before you get rid of a mattress
- Check for bed bugs. If you've had bed bugs, wrap the mattress in plastic before moving it so they don't spread through your home.
- Don't dump it illegally. Leaving a mattress on the side of the road or in a vacant lot can get you fined, and it's a common complaint in San Antonio neighborhoods.
- Bundle your items. Old bed frame, nightstand, or that broken dresser? Get rid of it all in one trip.
- Measure your doorways and stairs if you're moving it yourself. King mattresses and box springs often don't bend the way you'd hope.
